Detecting Volcano‐Related Underground Mass Changes With a Quantum Gravimeter

Abstract We present the world's first time series acquired in summit area of an active volcano with absolute atom interferometry gravimeter. The device was installed ∼2.5 km from craters Mt. Etna and produced a continuous high–quality gravity series, despite unfavorable environmental conditions at installation site occurrence phases high volcanic tremor during acquisition interval. Comparison data superconducting gravimeters elsewhere on highlights correlated anomalies, demonstrating that quantum measured variations driven by bulk mass changes. latter are reflective processes, involving dynamics magma exsolved gas upper part Etna's plumbing system. Our results confirm operational possibilities gravimetry open new horizons for application method geophysics.
